I’m in a boat filming a young American Indian woman and her small child harvesting wild rice. There is an interesting rhythm to the process. She has two sticks and bends the rice plants into the boat and beats the rice from the stalks with the second ‘stick.’ An Indian man poles the boat through the rice ‘paddies.’
I’ve finished and am sitting there and idly ask whether he has ever capsized the boat.
‘Never.’
At that moment the boat turns over and we are all in the water (waist deep) with rice floating all over the place.
