MAN VS MACHINE

We had pillaged Kubrick’s 2001 for an idea for a commercial with Garry Kasparov playing chess against a computer. The idea was based on Garry’s playing IBM’s Deep Blue. I shot enough for a very long form idea using music from the film and using Kubrick’s editing rhythms and the music, Khachaturian’s Gayane Ballet Suite (Adagio). Of course, the clients hated my edit and did their own (that wasn’t really bad, but still a commercial).  Kasparov did a terrific job, understanding every aspect of performance, but why not. He was rated as one of the ten smartest people in the world by the American organization, SUPER SCHOLAR. In one of the shots he looks much like Chaplin.
