JOSEF ALBERS

I was trying to finish the film on motocross racing and hit a wall. It was just a bunch of guys riding their bikes fast.  It didn’t capture the transcendental feelings you get during the race itself. I don’t remember how the multiple image idea came about but even that lacked something. I was doing the opticals myself on a rented Oxberry so I decided to make separation matts and play with color as well. I used Josef Albers for the color selection. Albers paintings, almost forgotten now, HOMAGE TO THE SQUARE, played with color perception, so I just referenced his work to break up the imagery with various colors, very LSD like. There was a bit of ROBERT INDIANA in there as well.

Alas, I lost Albers book, FORMULATION, ARTICULATION in a divorce.

I miss the book a lot.
