Phil was a source of universal power, a Sun King. He exuded positive energy that infused all of BBDO. Although he didn’t actually write much of the great advertising that BBDO did under his watch, he influenced it to the greatest degree by hiring the best and the brightest, and driving them beyond their abilities. He had an acute eye and could spot problems instantly. His achievements in his era are beyond any and he was responsible for the crossover effects of celebrity to a degree that will never be seen again.
